Diseases can be treated by Bone Marrow Transplant?

A bone marrow transplant also called a blood stem cell transplant or BMT can treat many diseases. For some diseases, BMT is the only potential cure. There are over 70 diseases that can be treated by BMT. Some of them are listed here.

Patients undergo transplant for a wide variety of malignant and non-malignant conditions including:
Malignant conditions
Hematologic Malignancies

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

Solid Tumors
Neuroblastoma
Brain tumors
Ewing sarcoma
Rhabdomyosarcoma

Non-Malignant Conditions
Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes

Aplastic anemia
Fanconi Anemia

Hemoglobinopathies

Sickle cell anemia
Thalassemia

Primary Immune Deficiencies

Bone Marrow Transplant Procedure & Types | Surgery Tours India

Bone Marrow Transplant Procedure A bone marrow transplant depends on the following conditions such as a patient's ability to tolerate certain medications, the type of transplant and the disease that requires a transplant. The procedure  includes the following - The preparation of a  bone marrow transplant  involves high doses of radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. This is required for treating a specific disease and also to create a sufficient room in the bone marrow for the new cells to develop. Myeloablative or ablative is the name given to this therapy due to its effect on the bone marrow. Majority of blood cells in the body are produced by the bone marrow. The marrow becomes empty when the ablative or Myeloablative therapy stops the cell production. The new stem cells require an empty marrow so that they can grow and simultaneously establish themselves as new blood cell production system. The marrow  transplant  is given from the central venous cat...

Why is a bone marrow transplant needed | Bmt Abroad

Why is a bone marrow transplant needed? The objective of a bone marrow transplant is to treat many diseases and types of cancer. When the doses of chemotherapy or radiation needed to treat cancer are so high that a person’s bone marrow stem cells will be permanently harmed or destroyed by the treatment, a bone marrow transplant may be needed. Bone marrow transplants may also be required if the bone marrow has been destroyed by a disease. A bone marrow transplant can be used to: Replace diseased, nonfunctioning bone marrow with healthy functioning bone marrow (for conditions such as leukemia, aplastic anemia, and sickle cell anemia). Regenerate a new immune system that will fight existing or residual leukemia or other cancers not killed by the chemotherapy or radiation used in the transplant. Replace the bone marrow and restore its normal function after high doses of chemotherapy and/or radiation are given to treat a malignancy. This process is often called resc...
